IRS to End Acceptance of Paper Checks After September 2025

Taxpayers urged to switch to digital payments

Beginning October 1, 2025, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will no longer accept paper checks for tax payments, marking a significant shift toward digital transactions. This change is aimed at streamlining payment processing and enhancing security, as the IRS encourages taxpayers to use electronic payment methods such as direct bank transfers, credit cards, and the IRS’s online payment portal. Taxpayers who typically mail checks are advised to update their payment habits ahead of the September 30 deadline to avoid delays or complications with their tax obligations.
